How to Put a Harness on Your Cat

As more people in big cities are choosing to keep cats as pets, it’s important to remember that cats are naturally less compliant than some other pets. They are alert, sensitive, and incredibly fast and agile, with quick reflexes. Because of this, putting a harness on a cat can be a challenging task.

When selecting a harness for your cat, there are several things to consider. A chest harness is often a good choice because it distributes pressure more evenly, reducing strain on your cat’s neck, which is a delicate area. But what should you keep in mind when putting a harness on your cat?

As a pet accessories manufacturer, KUDI is here to share some tips.

When putting on a chest harness, make sure it fits snugly around your cat’s chest, just behind the front legs. This ensures comfort and security. Be careful not to make it too tight, as this could restrict your cat’s breathing, but also avoid making it too loose. If the harness is too loose, your cat—being naturally flexible—might easily wiggle out of it.

During the initial training phase, your cat might resist or try to escape the harness. Don’t force it on them. Instead, start by dragging the harness around the house to pique your cat’s curiosity. Once your cat seems interested, gently place the harness on them and let them get used to the feeling.

Next, separate the harness from the leash and let your cat wear just the harness for a while. This helps them get accustomed to it. Once your cat seems comfortable, attach the leash and try walking them indoors.

Remember: When taking your cat outside for the first time, keep the outing short and close to home, such as in your yard or a quiet area. Avoid places with too many people or cars, as these could easily startle your cat.

If your cat shows signs of fear or agitation, end the activity immediately. Pushing them too far could make them develop a negative association with wearing a harness or going outside.

By taking things slow and being patient, you can help your cat adjust to wearing a harness and enjoy safe outdoor adventures together!
